Recreational Riding
In addition to our year round therapeutic riding program, MTR offers recreational riding lessons to riders of all abilities and interests. Lessons take place on MTR's 25-acre farm located in Crownsville, MD. Facilities include two lighted outdoor arenas and one fantastic indoor arena. We provide qualified and well-trained staff and horses. These unique lessons are conducted by Naomi Parry and Kelly Rodgers and are individual in style and lesson delivery. Naomi's dressage (see flyer) approach focuses upon the rider's position and the correct training of the horse. Kelly's hunter/jumper approach brings diversity to this exciting form of recreational riding. Our instructors look forward to sharing a wealth of knowledge with you. A short biography is included about the instructor team.

The British Horse Society

The BHS is an internationally recognized organization that has extremely high standards and expectations for the equine industry and focuses on equine welfare, safety and education. The BHS has 1000 centers approved world-wide—but only eight in the US. Each center goes though rigorous annual inspections carried out by an official BHS inspector and is expected to maintain and operate at an advanced level of standards.

In December 2009, Maryland Therapeutic Riding was awarded with the prestigious title of "British Horse Society Approved Center" after a successful visit from a site visitor from the United Kingdom.

The BHS will open up a host of avenues for MTR, including:

  1. Exposure to parts of the equine industry that may not be currently aware of MTR and therapeutic riding;

  2. Attracting a larger number of high-quality instructors and equine professionals to teach, work and volunteer at MTR; and

  3. Continuing education for volunteers, staff, instructors and therapists with training courses and certifications in riding and stable management.

Jo McCallum, MTR’s BHS expert says, "It is such a pleasure to be associated with and work with a professional organization such as the BHS. We hope that this partnership will only enhance MTR's high standards for program quality through excellence in horsemanship."

The British Horse Society Progressive Riding Tests 16

Combined, these tests are equivalent to the BHS complete stage one examination. Therefore they are great methods for preparing for the stages exams or simply an alternative way to achieve a high standard for formal equine education. Tests are practical and theory-based for riding and stable management. Designed and conducted in a way to suit the individual, both components require testing a demonstration of skills and knowledge. MTR is currently only hosting levels 14
